Four cameras in the right places beat twelve in the wrong ones.
Most small-business camera systems in New York record everything and prove nothing. The footage exists, the incident is on it, and nobody can identify anyone, because the system was sized by camera count instead of by what each camera had to be able to see.
Every camera has one job, and it should be written down
Before hardware, before brand, before price: what specific question does this camera have to be able to answer six weeks from now?
The industry standard for “how far can this camera see” is not megapixels. It is pixel density on the target: how many pixels span a person at the distance where they matter. The long-standing benchmark put reliable identification of a stranger at 250 pixels per meter of scene width, and the 2025 revision of that international standard raised the bar to 500 pixels per meter, because 250 turned out to be inadequate once you add low light, motion and compression. Detection (knowing a person is there) needs a small fraction of that.
That single number reorganizes a storefront design. It means the camera on the ceiling covering the whole sales floor is a detection camera. It will tell you that at 9:42 p.m. someone came in and went to the back. It will not identify them, ever, regardless of how many megapixels it has, because the pixels are spread across forty feet of room. Identification comes from a camera framed tight on a choke point at roughly head height (the door, the register, the corridor to the stock room), where a face crosses a narrow field.
So a good four-camera storefront system usually looks like this: one tight on the entrance at head height, one overhead on the register framed on the drawer and the hands, one on the rear door or stock room entrance, one wide for context. A bad twelve-camera system is twelve wide shots. The second costs more and answers less.
The other half of the specification is retention, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion. One megabit per second of video is about 10.8 GB per day. Eight 4 MP cameras on modern compression at 15 frames per second, recording continuously for 30 days, works out to roughly 7.8 TB of usable storage, or about 10.4 TB raw once you allow for redundancy. If someone quotes you 30 days on a 4 TB recorder for that camera count, the system will silently overwrite at about twelve days, and you will find out the week you need day fourteen.
Five constraints that only exist on a city storefront
None of these appear in a national camera brochure and all of them change what gets installed.
- Infrared through glass never works. A camera behind the storefront window with its own IR on returns a white sheet, because the light reflects off the glazing straight back into the lens. Every storefront camera looking out through glass needs its IR disabled and external white light instead. This is the single most common reason a shop’s night footage is unusable, and it is free to fix if it is caught before the install.
- A daylight doorway is a silhouette. A camera facing your entrance in the afternoon sees a dark shape against a bright street. The fix is true multi-exposure wide dynamic range (hardware that captures several exposures and fuses them), not the digital contrast tricks that share the acronym. Ask for the specification, because the two are marketed identically and only one works on a west-facing door in October.
- The sidewalk shed will come. A scaffold goes up next door for a facade repair and your exterior camera watches plywood for eighteen months. Design assuming it: mount the exterior position where it can be relocated under the shed, run a spare cable to a second location while the wall is open, and expect to remount rather than to lose the coverage.
- The roll gate is not the weak point. Break-ins through a storefront gate are loud, slow and visible. The rear door, the cellar hatch in the sidewalk, and the shared hallway from the residential entrance above are quieter. Put a door position switch on each of them and you will learn something in the first month, usually that one of them is propped open regularly during deliveries.
- Sidewalk and cellar equipment gets wet. Anything mounted low, in an areaway, near a sidewalk vault or in a cellar with a floor drain needs an ingress rating that assumes immersion rather than splash, and an impact rating if it is reachable from the street. A dome rated for dust and water jets is not the same as one rated for thirty minutes under a meter of water, and in a Manhattan areaway after a summer downpour that difference is the whole camera.
Controlled entry on a glass storefront, and the frame that decides it
Buzz-in retail is a genuine New York pattern: jewelry, watch repair, phone repair, pharmacies, check cashing, some galleries. The customer presses a button, someone inside looks, the door releases. It is simple in concept and the physical detail decides whether it is a two-hour job or a four-figure one.
The constraint is almost always the frame. An aluminum storefront jamb is typically only about 1¾ to 2 inches deep, and a standard electric strike body will not fit in it, particularly where there is a sidelite or a narrow stile. That pushes you toward a strike specifically made for narrow-stile aluminum, or toward electrifying the exit device itself, or toward a magnetic lock. Each has consequences: the narrow-stile strike is fussy about latch alignment, the electrified exit device needs current transferred through the moving leaf, and a maglock brings the full sensor-release code package with it.
Two more details that decide whether it feels right. First, alternating-current strikes buzz and direct-current strikes do not: the buzz is the plunger oscillating at line frequency. Old shops expect the buzz as feedback and complain when a new DC strike is silent. If your customers rely on hearing it, say so before the install and we will add an audible signal rather than have you notice it on day two. Second, the release button belongs where the person who watches the door actually stands, and there should be a second one at the register if the shop is ever staffed by one person.
And for a two-door mantrap arrangement (where the outer door has to relock before the inner one releases), understand that the interlock is only as good as the door position switches. Without them the system is guessing about whether the outer door actually closed.

Positions, not products. A shop with four well-placed cameras and a door contact usually resolves incidents faster than one with twelve wide shots and no contacts.
Where a camera is illegal, and where a microphone is worse
Under New York General Business Law §395-b, installing or maintaining a device to surreptitiously observe the interior of a fitting room, restroom, toilet, bathroom, shower or hotel guest room is an offense, and each device counts as a separate violation. There is a narrow exception for fitting rooms with conspicuous written notice posted at the entrance, and in New York City that notice must be in both English and Spanish. New York Labor Law §203-c separately prohibits video recording of employees in restrooms, locker rooms and rooms designated for changing clothes.
Audio is the trap people fall into by accident, because cameras ship with microphones enabled. New York is a one-party consent state, but that consent has to come from a party to the conversation. An unattended microphone recording two other people talking has nobody consenting, and eavesdropping is a class E felony under Penal Law §250.05. We disable camera audio by default and will only enable it where there is a specific, documented reason and posted notice.
If you use fingerprint or facial credentials (a fingerprint time clock counts), New York City retail stores, entertainment venues and food-and-drink establishments have a signage duty at every customer entrance under Admin Code §22-1201, and an absolute prohibition on selling or otherwise profiting from that data.
Common questions
How many cameras does a small shop actually need?
For a single-room storefront under about 1,200 square feet, four to six is usually right: entrance tight at head height, register overhead, rear or stock room door, and one or two wide for context. Adding cameras beyond that generally adds storage cost and viewing time without adding answers, unless the layout has genuine blind corners or a second entrance.
The question that actually sizes it is not square footage but choke points. Every place a person must pass through (the door, the counter, the corridor to the back) is worth a camera. Open floor is worth one wide view, not four.
For budgeting, a properly installed small commercial system of four to six cameras in New York typically lands somewhere in the low thousands to around six thousand dollars all in, with the spread driven almost entirely by how hard the cable routes are rather than by the cameras. That is a typical range, subject to survey. A shop with an accessible drop ceiling and one with plaster over lath and no pathway are different jobs at the same camera count.
Will cameras stop shoplifting?
Honestly, not much on their own, and any installer who promises otherwise is selling. Visible cameras displace some opportunistic theft and are useful for that. What they reliably do is resolve incidents: give you an identifiable image, a timestamp, and a sequence you can hand to police or to an insurer.
Where cameras do change loss meaningfully is internal, and specifically at the register. A camera framed on the drawer and the hands, timestamps aligned with your point-of-sale export, and a habit of spot-checking voided and no-sale transactions catches patterns that no amount of floor coverage will. That is a process change with a camera attached, not a camera purchase.
The other genuinely effective measure is unglamorous: a door position switch on the rear and cellar doors with an alarm when they are held open. Most back-of-house loss goes out through a door that was open for a legitimate reason and stayed open.
Our landlord says we cannot drill the facade. What are the options?
Common, and usually solvable. First establish whether it is a lease restriction or a landmark one, because they have different answers. A lease restriction is negotiable and often becomes a written consent with a make-good obligation at the end of the term. A landmark district restriction is not negotiable and involves a review before any Buildings filing: anything street-visible on a designated facade, including a camera housing, surface conduit or an exterior reader.
Where the exterior is genuinely off limits, the workable approaches are mounting inside the glass line looking out (which brings the infrared and glare problems above, so plan for external white light and true wide dynamic range), or mounting on the underside of an existing awning or recess where the fixing is not into the protected material, or coming through an existing penetration rather than a new one. Getting a camera out of a shed-covered facade often means the second approach.
Can we record audio at the counter?
Default answer: no, and we ship systems with microphones disabled. New York is a one-party consent state, which sounds permissive until you notice what an unattended camera actually is: a device recording conversations between people, none of whom is the recorder. That is mechanical overhearing without any party’s consent, and it is a felony rather than a fine.
The narrow situations where audio can be appropriate involve a participating party (for example a staffed intercom where the employee is part of the conversation), or clearly posted notice. Even then it is worth asking what the audio buys you. In practice, almost every dispute a small shop needs footage for is resolved by the image and the timestamp, and the audio adds legal exposure without adding evidence.
A sidewalk shed just went up. Are our cameras useless now?
The exterior ones probably are, at least for anything above knee height, and there is no clever setting that fixes it. What we can usually do is relocate a camera to the shed’s underside or to the fascia so you keep coverage of the entrance and the sidewalk immediately in front of it. Sheds have a deck and posts that are generally workable mounting points with the contractor’s permission, and that permission is worth asking for early because scaffold contractors are more agreeable before the shed is fully loaded.
The longer-term lesson is a design one. When we install an exterior position we prefer to leave a service loop and, where the wall is already open, a spare pathway to a second location. It costs very little at install time and it converts a shed from a lost year of coverage into an afternoon of relocation.
One upside worth knowing: sheds add lighting and change how people move on the sidewalk, and a camera relocated under the deck at head height often produces better identification footage than the original higher mount did.
We run a jewelry counter. Is a buzz-in door worth it?
For high-value, low-footfall retail, generally yes. Its value is behavioral rather than mechanical. A locked door with a person deciding who comes in changes who tries. It costs you walk-in browsing traffic, which for some businesses is the entire model and for others is irrelevant, so that trade-off should be made on the retail side before it is made on the security side.
Two things to get right if you do it. The release control belongs where the person watching the door actually stands, with a second one at the counter for single-staff hours. And the exit has to remain free: whatever is on the door, a person inside must be able to leave with one motion and without a key, a code or special knowledge. Any arrangement that fails that test is not a security choice, it is a violation, and we will not install one.
